Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE) is a state owned non-primary commercial airport located southwest of Kamuela, an unincorporated town in Hawaii County and originally built during WWII. An aircraft rescue and fire fighting facility is on site.

Golfing The Big Island is known as the gold capital of the state, and nearly half of its golf courses are within a close proximity. Petroglyphs Some petroglyphs, or rock carvings, date back to the 16th century and there are two fields just west of Waimea. Pololu Valley Pololu Valley is the northernmost valley carved into Kohala Volcano. This valley offers impressive views, hiking, and a black sand beach.
